GETTING STARTED
Warning:Training at Abhaya is habit-forming. Before embarking on the steps outlined below you should be aware that participating in Mixed Martial Arts will bring about increased strength, cardiovascular conditioning, improved self-image, confidence and general feelings of well-being and contentment.
Step 1: Contact us.
First, tell us a little about yourself. The most direct way is to call us at 542-1666 and talk to one of our trainers. If we're not there to answer the phone, please leave a message on the machine with your name, phone number and the best time for us to return your call. We hate voice-mail too, but we have lots of classes to run and sometimes we're away from the office so don't be shy. We'll get back to you promptly. Alternatively, you can use the handy form below to get in touch with us. In either case, we'll work out the best time for you to come in and check us out (see step 2)
Step 2: Check us out.
After talking to one of our trainers, you'll be able to come out and try your first class. If you're not quite ready to get out on the mats, you can just observe a class. If you are ready to jump right in, you'll want to wear comfortable, loose-fitting shorts or track pants and a t-shirt and bring a water bottle or sports beverage. Please make sure your clothes have no metal zippers or snaps and no sleaveless shirts please. If you're starting out in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class and you own a gi (martial arts uniform), bring it. If you don't have a gi, don't worry. We have spare jackets that you can wear for your trial class. If you're coming to a Muay Thai Kickboxing class and you have your own wraps and boxing gloves, bring them. Otherwise, we have spare gloves that you can wear.
We get a lot of interest from people who want to "learn Mixed Martial Arts." It's important to realize that Mixed Martial Arts encompasses a broad set of skills including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wrestling and Western Boxing. In our experience, it is very difficult to learn everything all at once. The intricacies of grappling can't be understand while being punched and the basics of kickboxing can't be grasped when someone is taking you to the ground. For this reason, we don't allow beginners to start with the Thursday-night MMA class.
After your first class, you'll have a chance to talk to the instructor about how it went and schedule your second trial class.
Step 3: Start your introductory month.
So you've completed your two trial lessons and you're hooked, right? We've got a great introductory-month fee of $29.99 (plus HST). The cost for equipment is outlined below. You might find that you gravitate toward certain classes over others. Where your training path is taking you will determine what equipment you need to purchase. We take payment in the form of cash or cheque or we can bill you online through Paypal so you can pay with a credit card.
Prices do not include HST
